TEAM RAISES CHAMPIONSHIP BANNER TONIGHT!

Since it opened in 1999, Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium hasn't been draped with a signature item, something that signifies success in Lancers athletics. That all changes Friday night when the Pasadena City College women's basketball team raises its first state championship banner in a ceremony prior to the Lancers season-opening game.

The Lancers, who captured the college's first women's state team championship in any sport back in March, will not only raise the 2008-2009 title banner, but will also have championship rings distributed to players and coaches from last season's squad. The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m., following the third game of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic.

PCC will follow the ceremony by facing Los Angeles Valley College in a 7 p.m. tip-off (time varies depending on length of previous games).

Joe Peron, recently selected the South Coast Conference Coach of the Year, will direct the ceremony. Peron begins his 14th season in charge of the Lancers, a career that includes 324 victories and a current streak of six consecutive appearances at the Elite Eight state tournament.

Returning from the defending state champions are starting guard Kim Smith, backup point guard Melissa Fudge, reserve center Cherisa Sellers, and reserve guard Raven Faafiti. Smith was the hero of the Lancers' semifinals victory over Ventura when she scored a PCC tournament record 35 points. Smith also set a school record and state tournament record by making 23 free throws in the win.

The Hilton Garden Inn Classic begins with a 12:30 p.m. game between Southwestern and LA Southwest, followed at 2:30 p.m. as San Diego City plays Chaffey. Prior to the banner/ring ceremony, Cypress plays Taft at 4:30 p.m. The tournament continues Saturday-Sunday, November 7-8. The championship game is Sunday at 4 p.m.
